How a critic thinks vs. how a filmmaker thinks…

This is why I generally avoid reading reviews for other movies when I’m making a film.

It’s so easy to get lost in the (often very interesting) analysis of a movie, and feel like you have to consciously embed motifs and subtext into your film to add even more layers to it.

But 99% the time, the qualities of a film that get deeply analyzed are embedded into the work organically and unconsciously. Trying to be too cerebral with it never works.

It’s the filmmakers job to create. It’s up to the critic to unpack what it means.

Loved the new HBO movie “Reality”. An FBI inte

Loved the new HBO movie “Reality”. An FBI interrogation transcript was used verbatim as the basis for the screenplay, which I thought was super innovative. But the directing and camera work adds style and dimension to it that feels naturally cinematic.

Also a great example for micro-budget filmmakers, as the concept / single location / real-time story would lend themselves well to lower budget indies working within limited means.

Worth checking out on HBO.

This month I replicated the Technicolor 3-strip pr

This month I replicated the Technicolor 3-strip process when making some new color grading LUTs. Have never done it this way before, but was very excited about the results.

Instead of just mimicking the Technicolor look, I used DaVinci Resolve to split apart the Red, Green, and Blue color channels, then recombined / added the channels back together.

This is how the original Technicolor look was created - A prism beam splitter was used in front of the lens to split the light from the camera and expose 3 separate film black and white strips.

These strips were dyed red, green, and blue, and combined to create the iconic saturated look we know from movies like Wizard of Oz, Gone With The Wind, and countless others.

I just published these LUTs to www.cinecolor.io under “Film Emulation”.

Photo hunt with Mickey. He only shoots film now apparently!

Every filmmaker should be studying the work of Hon

Every filmmaker should be studying the work of Hong Sang-soo. He's directed 27 feature films in just 26 years. And 16 of those movies were made in the last decade alone.

He regularly premieres two movies in a single year at major festivals like Cannes, Berlin, Venice, and others.

And he's done it with budgets in the $50K - $100K range, by innovating across all areas - writing, production and post.

On many of his films, he is not only the writer/director, but also cinematographer, editor, and composer (among other things).

Working this way allows him to improvise scripts and ideas, often waiting until he arrives on set to determine what will be shot that day.

And all of this helps him work at a lightning pace. His feature film “Grass” (which premiered at the Berlin film festival), was shot in just 3 days. Many other features he’s made have been shot on similar timelines, and some have been edited in as little as 1 - 2 days, which is unheard of.

His method is definitely not optimal for more traditionally minded filmmakers. But it’s a great case in point that there is no one way to make a movie.
