Who wants to attend NAB Show this year for free? I’ve been generously granted free exhibit passes by the show and want to share them with all of you.

There’s always a ton of great education and networking to be had at NAB Show, but I’ll admit it’s the new camera announcements that get me the most excited. We won’t know for sure until October, but I’m hoping we see these 3 rumored cameras at the show:

1. Canon C50

The C50 is apparently going to be the new entry level cinema camera in Canon’s C-series line, and it’s rumored to be released this year. As a big fan of the C100/C200/C300, I’m excited to see what’s in store for the C50, and how it stacks up to the rest of the lineup.

2. Lumix GH6

I’ve been a long time Lumix fan, ever since their iconic GH2 model hit the shelves. Panasonic has already announced the latest iteration (the GH6) is coming this year, so my fingers are crossed that we’ll hear a lot more about it at the show.

3. Blackmagic

Since the original BMCC was released, Blackmagic has stolen the show at NAB Show almost every year with their groundbreaking product announcements. What will it be this year? A new micro-cinema camera? An 8K pocket cam? Your guess is as good as mine, but I’m betting Blackmagic won’t disappoint.

I’ve always loved the 1.66:1 aspect ratio. It hasn’t been used on a ton of modern films, but it was the European widescreen standard for decades and was also popularized by Super 16mm filmmakers (since S16 has a native 1.66:1 aspect). So despite it being a relatively obscure format, there are actually quite a few notable films that have used it. Below are just a handful of examples –

Jackie (2016)

The VVitch (2015)

Blue Valentine (2010)

The Good German (2006)

Pi (1998)

Fanny and Alexander (1982)

New York, New York (1977)

Barry Lyndon (1975)

Clockwork Orange (1971)

Rear Window (1954)

On The Waterfront (1954)

Beware of the fear of failure. It stops many filmm

Beware of the fear of failure. It stops many filmmakers and creatives before they even had a chance to try. And it often masquerades as other things: procrastination, excuses, busy at the day job, etc.

Obviously some movies need a lot of money, gear, resources, etc. to get made.

But a first feature in 2021 can be made on a phone and a laptop. It doesn’t have to be big. It’s better if it’s small.

There is virtually no barrier to entry and no good reason to not make your art, unless you just don’t want to.

WAKING LIFE was one of my entry points to Linklate

WAKING LIFE was one of my entry points to Linklater, and a high school favorite. The frame by frame, hand drawn/rotoscoped animation style still holds up 20 years later. I remember loving that the film was shot on DVX100, which at the time was the most “cinematic” camera you could get, without shooting on a proper 35mm/16mm film cam.
