These are a few of my favorite shots from TEACHER’S PET, which comes out everywhere today! I ended up DP’ing as well as directing this feature, and decided to rely more on lens choices and framing to create a vibe, since we were a skeleton crew and had to keep lighting gear minimal. Most shots were lit with natural / available light. Others used a single LED 1 x 1 panel, or a tube light on a c-stand.

PTA completely reworked the ending of ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER after finding this hilly desert road on a separate location scout. By writing the script to the location, instead of the other way around, he delivered one of the most memorable experiences in recent cinema.

TRAIN DREAMS is a masterclass in visual framing -

TRAIN DREAMS is a masterclass in visual framing - especially for those working with taller aspect ratios (such as 3:2, which it was uniquely shot with).

Most filmmakers are taught to use the rule of thirds when framing, and that can be a helpful guide with wider aspect ratios like 2.39:1. But when you’re working in 4:3 (or 3:2 in this case), using quadrants to frame your shots can be incredibly powerful.

Almost every shot in the film either places the focal point in one of the four quadrants, or filling one half of the shot (top, bottom, left, or right). Occasionally, shots are center framed too, which is a powerful shift after you’ve settled into the use of negative space as a viewer.

I also love the choice of wider angle lenses for closeups, which helps bring more of the environment into the nearly square frame.

Brilliant work by director Clint Bentley and DP Adolpho Veloso.

CAMERA SHOOTOUT: I compared 10 different cameras (all shooting in Log) to see which would come closest to Arri Alexa 35 - the gold standard for color science.

Each camera could be color matched to appear more Alexa-like, but some cameras performed far better than others. And the camera with the best match was a huge surprise to me.

I love the way PTA will subtly mismatch coverage to add nuance and subtext to his visual language. In this scene from ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER, DiCaprio is framed differently in 3 ways:

1. He is larger in the frame
2. The angle is more severe / downward
3. His shot is clean without seeing any foreground

It’s effective because most of the coverage in the film is more evenly balanced. So when a scene like this hits it really jumps out at you.

Whether or not you agree with the final result, you have to respect Chris Nolan’s commitment to the analog process. Most directors would have gone full CGI for something like this, but Nolan pulled it off with old school cardboard cutouts - doing as much in-camera as possible.

Sometimes you need a more complicated setup. But more often than not, you can achieve the same look (or better) with fewer sources and more naturally motivated lighting. Some window light and a little unbleached muslin can go a long way - all that matters is the final frame, not what’s in the BTS shots.

Always love when tiny prosumer cameras like the LU

Always love when tiny prosumer cameras like the LUMIX GH7 are used on bigger budget / theatrically released productions. These shots are from Lav Diaz’s MAGELLAN, which used a series of custom rigged GH7 cameras to achieve a documentary-like Super 16 aesthetic. The camera’s native 4:3 ratio, filmic texture, and smaller MFT sensor size made it the perfect tool to achieve a 16mm look digitally. And clearly the visuals held up as the film won over audiences at Cannes and will soon hit theaters.
