In this article, I share a definitive list of every available digital video/cinema camera that is capable of recording to ProRes internally.
Almost any camera with a clean HDMI/SDI output can record to ProRes externally, using monitor/recorders like the Atomos Ninja. But very few can record ProRes internally (straight to the memory card in camera), which can be an essential feature.
For instance, if you need to build out a minimalist camera rig in order to keep a small footprint, you might not want to use yet another peripheral device – like an external recorder. Being able to record ProRes straight to your camera helps streamline your workflow both on set and in post.
Most of the cameras on the list below are cinema cameras, but there are a handful of consumer/prosumer level cameras on the list too. It seems that more manufactures are making ProRes a priority, and I hope this trend continues in the future.
For now, the list below represents all available options for recording ProRes internally – from entry level mirrorless cameras to professional cinema offerings, and everything in between.
Cameras That Record ProRes Internally
Please note that each camera on this list offers different flavors of ProRes (from ProRes Proxy to ProRes RAW). So be sure to research any specific camera you are interested in to ensure it meets your technical needs.

atLike!! I blog quite often and I genuinely thank you for your information. The article has truly peaked my interest.
Markus
atThe Mavic Cine can shot Prores too.

atThank you Noam. After zooming 600% into my GH6 footage to compare internal ProRes 4:2:2 HQ 4K59.94 to internal HEVC 10-bit 5.7K59.94 4:2:0 300Mb/s, I can report that macro blocking in highly detailed and contrasting areas is strongly present with HEVC. I now completely appreciate ProRes both for its quality and its hyper accelerated playback and encoding speed in the Apple M1 Ultra processor thanks to the embedded dedicated Media Engine chip. Consumers and Professionals would greatly benefit from cameras with ProRes RAW, as it’s also a brilliantly accelerated codec that erases the idea that RAW is a difficult video codec to work with. Such a shame that RED has a steadfast patent on internal compressed RAW video formats. It would be such a win for the videography community to see the patent overturned.

atThanks for testing this and sharing the results!

atProRes raw internally?
When you got to do pov, anything might be used. So, is there a list out there of everything that uses ProRes and ProRes raw? I would like to find a 4kp50 Acton Cam that does ProRes myself. But still haven’t seen one. The most you see, is one that did mpeg1 and maybe GoPro will have the cineform successor codec used for video as well one day (they have specialist cameras starting late this year). That’s the sort of thing you need recording wide field and 360.
Apple has a page listing products which use prores. Maybe they know.

atI also forgot to add Panavision Millenium DXL can also record ProRes internally! Thanks again for making this!

atGreat list thanks for taking the time to do this! Also thanks to the commenters for helping fix it! I’d like to add a couple cameras. Kinefinity Terra 4K and the Terra 6K. Both can record ProRes 4444 internally.
Noam Kroll
atThanks for checking it out, Alfred!

atSigma FP!
Vlad
atUnfortunately, it can only record CinemaDNG and H.264 internaly.
Tobias Falk
atA great list! One note, the Blackmagic 12K is a fantastic camera, but it doesn’t record ProRes, only BRAW.
Noam Kroll
atFixed, thank you!
Monty Cantsin
atThe list seems to be neither complete, nor correct. What I spotted immediately: The Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera is missing; the Panasonic GH5s doesn’t record internal ProRes, and neither do the two variants of the Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K.
Noam Kroll
atFixed the errors – and how could I forget the micro cinema camera? I own one and love it… Thanks for the input here.
