Love the brilliant innovation on AD ASTARA by cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema. To make it truly appear as if the footage were shot on the moon, he rigged up two cameras to capture identical frames. The first was a 35mm panavision film camera, and the second was an infrared Arri Alexa.

This allowed them to shoot in bright daylight, which created shadows consistent with real moonlight, and then process the footage in post to replace the sky using the infrared footage. The result was a far more authentic look than they could have achieved with traditional film lighting.

This approach was later refined by Hoyte van Hoytema for the extensive night exterior scenes in Jordan Peele’s NOPE, one of the best recent examples of the day for night technique.

Almost picture locked on our upcoming film (Jack & Christine), which will hit festivals soon. Was such a treat to direct these amazing actors - @nikkilorenzo @iamlukebarnett and the legendary John Hawkes. We did multiple table reads to workshop the script, and I ended up writing 24 drafts to get it just right - a lot of tinkering but necessary to add the layers and depth the story hinged on. Excited to share with all of you soon.

Love seeing experimental shots executed at this level. On CHALLENGERS, an entire glass floor was rigged so the actors could perform on top of it with the crew and cameras underneath. Shots like this could easily be written off as “unnecessary” to the story, or seen as an unneeded expense - but those extra details are what you remember months after leaving the theater.

These are a few of my favorite shots from TEACHER’S PET, which comes out everywhere today! I ended up DP’ing as well as directing this feature, and decided to rely more on lens choices and framing to create a vibe, since we were a skeleton crew and had to keep lighting gear minimal. Most shots were lit with natural / available light. Others used a single LED 1 x 1 panel, or a tube light on a c-stand.

PTA completely reworked the ending of ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER after finding this hilly desert road on a separate location scout. By writing the script to the location, instead of the other way around, he delivered one of the most memorable experiences in recent cinema.

TRAIN DREAMS is a masterclass in visual framing -

TRAIN DREAMS is a masterclass in visual framing - especially for those working with taller aspect ratios (such as 3:2, which it was uniquely shot with).

Most filmmakers are taught to use the rule of thirds when framing, and that can be a helpful guide with wider aspect ratios like 2.39:1. But when you’re working in 4:3 (or 3:2 in this case), using quadrants to frame your shots can be incredibly powerful.

Almost every shot in the film either places the focal point in one of the four quadrants, or filling one half of the shot (top, bottom, left, or right). Occasionally, shots are center framed too, which is a powerful shift after you’ve settled into the use of negative space as a viewer.

I also love the choice of wider angle lenses for closeups, which helps bring more of the environment into the nearly square frame.

Brilliant work by director Clint Bentley and DP Adolpho Veloso.
